DATASET 01

Dr Sandro Chatterjee

I am an ARC Grant-Funded Researcher A in the Tectonics & Earth Systems (TES) Group, School of Physics, Chemistry and Earth Sciences, Adelaide University, Australia. My research integrates structural geology, metamorphic petrology, geochronology, and isotope geochemistry to address fundamental questions concerning the tectonic evolution of the Proterozoic Earth, crustal growth, and supercontinent assembly.

My current research focuses on the southern Arabian-Nubian Shield of Saudi Arabia, where I investigate the tectonic evolution of this Neoproterozoic juvenile arc system using an integrated framework of structural geology, geochronology (zircon U-Pb, Muscovite and Biotite Rb-Sr) and geochemistry.

In parallel, I am also working in the Eastern Ghats Province (EGP) of India, employing detrital zircon U–Pb geochronology together with Hf and Nd isotopic analyses to constrain sediment provenance, protolith characteristics, and the nature of the EGP basement, thereby contributing to refined models of Proterozoic tectonic reconstruction.

In collaboration with colleagues at Adelaide University, I am involved in studies of the Precambrian basement terranes of Oman and the volcanic successions of the southern Flinders Ranges, South Australia, using zircon U–Pb geochronology to unravel their geological histories. I am also participating in collaborative projects with the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, India that investigates the tectonic evolution of the Rengali Province and the Eastern Ghats Province of India through integrated structural, metamorphic, and geochronological approaches, including zircon U–Pb, garnet Lu–Hf, and titanite U–Pb dating.

I pursued my PhD from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur), India, in 2025 and my doctoral research was focused on the correlation of the southern Eastern Ghats Province of India with East Antarctic terranes. By integrating structural, metamorphic, and geochronological constraints, I tried to develop a refined Indo-Antarctic tectonic framework spanning from Archean to the Neoproterozoic, with implications for supercontinent reconstruction.

I am also interested in investigating the lithospheric rheology and crust–mantle interactions within ultra-high temperature (UHT) metamorphic terranes. Through multidisciplinary studies combining field geology, petrology, geochronology, and microstructures, I seek to constrain the geodynamic conditions responsible for UHT metamorphism and the subsequent thermal evolution of deep continental crust. I am also interested in quartz grain-boundary processes and their implications for crustal deformation and rheological behaviour.

Last but not the least, I collaborate with researchers across tectonics, metamorphic petrology, polar science, geochronology, metallurgy, and material science. Through these multidisciplinary efforts, I aim to decipher the complexities of the tectonic history of the Proterozoic Earth, a pursuit that remains at the forefront of my scientific endeavours.
